History and monuments of Byzantine enamels, most from Alexandre Zwenigorodskoi’s collection. Kondakow’s catalogue, dedicated by Zwenigorodskoi to the Czar Alexandre III, limited to 600 copies, 200 each in French, Russian and German. A beautifully chromo-lithographed edition in gold and silver handwork. The architect J. Ropet designed the dedication leaf (in gold, silver and colours), the title pages, the coloured and gold initials, the decorations and the embroidered book-mark, all exact copies of byzantine designs. Engraved portrait of A.Zwenigorodskoi in several copies for presentation. 113 numbered illustrations throughout the text and 31 chromo-lithographed plates with gold on thick paper (following page 368) protected by rice-paper. At the end of the book, lists of names and articles, descriptions of illustrations and table of contents. Ex-libris. Publisher’s embossed silk, heavily decorated with gilt and black, leather spine, edges with colour, gold and silver designs. Decorated end-papers (copy of a byzantine cloth design). Repaired silk book-mark embroidered with gold thread, with a Greek phrase from Euripides.
